There were square holes in the wall surrounding the old city of Fez. The holes were irregularly placed here and there on the wall. I wondered what they were built for. There were too many of them to be mere drainage holes, and I dreamed that they might have been whack-a-mole holes. It would be a spectacular sight if, when a switch was pressed somewhere, the moles would emerge from all over the place in sequence.

The holes that looked so strange to me seemed familiar to the locals, and they paid no attention when I walked by them. A grandmother was quietly walking in front of the wall with her grandson in tow, looking bored. If a mole had emerged from the hole at this moment, the little boy would have walked with a more happy face.
