As I was walking around Ben Tre, I met a couple of high school students. Both of them were wearing their school uniforms. The school uniforms for boys were quite ordinary to me as a Japanese. They were wearing white shirts and plain pants, no different from Japanese high school students. The girls' uniforms, on the other hand, are exotic. The ao dai is the school uniform. In Vietnam, the uniform for high school girls is not the sailor suit, but the ao dai, which looks exotic to foreigners.

Ao dai has an image of being worn by women, but it is said that it was originally a uniform worn by officials during the monarchy. In other words, it was worn by men. The current women's ao dai, with its slender shape and deep slits, is said to have been improved during the French colonial period. Is it my imagination, or does the Chinese dress and the ao dai have a slightly naughty atmosphere when Westerners are involved?

Although there are men's ao dai since it was originally a government uniform, men's ao dai is only worn by grooms and performers of traditional arts. Even now, only high school girls and women working in tourist stores wear it on a daily basis.
