Numerous tricycles are running under the strong sunlight

The tricycles often seen in the Philippines are a bit different from the trishaws running in Malaysia and Singapore, despite their similar names. While a trishaw is a bicycle cab with a seat attached to the bicycle, a tricycle is a motorcycle with a seat attached to it, like a sidecar covered by a roof. It is what is called a motorcycle cab.

In the town of Laoag, many tricycles pass in front of me as I stand on the side of the street and watch the traffic. Local people casually stop tricycles and get on them. Even students seem to be casually riding in them. This is a different feeling from that of cabs in Japan. Perhaps it is because they are inexpensive.

While looking at a running trishaw, I noticed a license plate on the front of a sidecar with a seat. Unlike in Bangladesh, where an unmanageable number of cycle rickshaws are running around, in the Philippines, it seems that trishaws running around town are under the proper control of the authorities.
