Walking through the market in Murshidabad, I found a man working silently in one corner. On his lap was a colander-like object, on top of which I could see finely chopped tobacco leaves. The man was here rolling the scraggly tobacco leaves by hand to make new cigarettes. Of course, the man does not do this as a hobby, but as a job. There seems to be much more demand for these handmade cigarettes than I, as a Japanese, would like to think, and they are sold all over the country.

I have actually smoked handmade cigarettes and found that they have no filter and have a slightly peculiar taste. I guess some people like this individuality, but above all, they seem to be popular among the working class because they are cheaper than cigarettes made by corporations.
