Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul was the royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. Men were standing at Heungnyemun Gate on the way from Gwanghwamun, the main gate, to the Gate of Service. The men were dressed as the guardian generals of the past. They held long swords in their hands, wore hats, and turned their sharp gazes toward the visitors. In this day and age, a man like me would not have been allowed to enter the royal palace, and even if I had tried, I would have been cut down by a guardian general like the one in the photo. Nowadays, however, it is no problem to enter the royal palace as a tourist, and if you drop some money, you will be thanked for your visit. It is a better world now.
