People were playing Janggi in a park on the side of the road. Janggi is a board game played by two people, similar to Japanese chess, Shogi. It is also called Korean chess. Like Shogi, it is said to have originated from a game called Chaturanga, which was invented in ancient India in B.C. In short, it is like a brother game to Shogi.

When I walk around Seoul, I often see people playing Korean chess or Go in the parks on the street corners. Although there are people who enjoy playing Shogi in Japan, most of the enthusiasts gather at Shogi or Go clubs, and you rarely see people playing Shogi or Go outdoors in parks. I wonder if it is common in Seoul for like-minded people to gather in a corner of a park.

I stood next to the chess board and watched the men move the pieces on the board. After a while, a man grabbed a piece and moved it forward. Even though it is a brother game to Japanese Shogi, I don't know if the way the pieces are moved is the same. I tried to learn how to move the pieces by watching others play, but it was a foolhardy attempt.
