About this photo

Shot at Sanjusangen-Do, a Buddhist temple in Higashiyama District of Kyoto. The temple was built in 1165. The Thousand Armed Kannon was stationed in the main hall. Along the main deity, the enormous number of wooden Kannon was placed. There were 1000 statues in this building.

Many wooden doors were built on the aspect of the hall. At the time of visiting, all of these doors were opened. It was a spectacular sight. Of course, there were no electric lamps at the time of construction. So these doors were built to let in the sunlight.
