The guardian dog in Yushima Seido opened its eyes wide

Yushima Seido, built by the fifth shogun Tsunayoshi, was originally the Confucius Temple. Later, it became the Shoheizaka Gakumonjo under the direct control of the shogunate, and after the Meiji Restoration, it became the birthplace of modern education in Japan. In a corner of Yushima Seido, I found a guardian dog that was no longer in use.

With its eyes and mouths wide open, the guardian dog looked as if it was surprised by something. It may have been that it was blindsided by the fact that the temple precincts were completely different from what they used to be. Throughout the Edo period (1603-1868), this school was the official school of the shogunate, so this place, which now looks like an oasis in the city, must have been a center of learning in the past and full of vitality. The image of the past may be stuck in the minds of the guardian dog and cannot be removed.
